Old Dogs

Rating: PG

Movie Release Date: November 25, 2009

DVD Release Date: March 9, 2010

Plot 411: Two old friends cope when one discovers he has 7-year-old twins.

Review: Dan (Robin Williams) and Charlie (John Travolta) are two sports marketing execs determined to land a major international deal. However, it's around that time that Dan meets up with a old flame (Kelly Preston) and learns he's the father of two kids - Zach (Connor Rayburn) and Emily (Ella Bleu Travolta). Together, Dan and Charlie must wade through the waters of parenthood and score big with their potential clients. Well, there were definitely a lot of recurring jokes about how old Dan and Charlie are, which got a bit stale after a while. Despite that, this was a good family movie that kids will enjoy. There are some slapstick moments that were funny, but other comedic moments just didn't work. Somehow the best part of the movie was a classic hit-to-the-groin gag. I guess stuff like that never gets . . . old? Hardy har har! Also in this movie are Seth Green (love him), Lori Laughlin, Bernie Mac (RIP), Matt Dillon and Justin Long.

Watch It: For all it's family goodness.

Skip It: And watch Mrs. Doubtfire instead for an even more rolicking good time.

Can't Hardly Wait

Rating: PG-13

Movie Release Date: June 12, 1998

DVD Release Date: December 22, 1998

Plot 411: One high school graduation party stands between between them and the rest of their lives.

Review: This movie definitely feels like a throwback to the teen comedies of the 1980s, especially those starring anyone of Brat Pack fame. In this film of multiple characters and plotlines, Preston (Ethan Embry) has finally decided to man up to his four-year crush on Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt). The popular girl has just been dumped by jockstar Mike (Peter Facinelli), who can't wait to hook up with college girls. Nerdy William (Charlie Korsmo) plans to seek his revenge on Mike for all the bullying and embarrassment he has been responsible for throughout the years. Outsider Denise (Lauren Ambrose) likes her independence and thinks everyone else is just a lemming but is forced to accompany her best friend Preston in his quest for love. At the party, she meets up with wigger Kenny (Seth Green) and calls him out on his behavior. I enjoyed the interwoven plots despite the somewhat cheesy high school stereotypes that were used. However, I suppose you can't really get away with a movie like this without sticking to those predetermined characters. In that regard, this is a well-crafted movie.

Watch It: For a taste of the '90s as the movie really does not transcend its time period very well.

Skip It: Because since it is a product of its time, a lot of things are dated and no longer effective.

Sex Drive

Rating: R

Movie Release Date: October 17, 2008

DVD Release Date: February 24, 2009

Plot 411: A guy and his friends drive cross country so he can meet his internet crush and get laid.

Review: Honestly, you can probably only appreciate this movie if you're a 15-year-old guy (or have that mentality or maturity level). I'm sure the regular version wasn't any better than the unrated one. But if you're that 15-year-old guy, definitely see the unrated version. Trust me. Lots of gratuitous T&A action going on. Also some big D swinging in for some cameos for all you girls. The plot was like any other teen comedy after American Pie, except the quality just doesn't compare. Maybe it's because we've become immune to all of those kinds of jokes? Basically this is a road movie in pursuit of what every teenage guy (and girl these days too) are in search of and the characters have little adventures along the way. What I did enjoy about the unrated version is that it started off with an inventive albeit cheesy intro from the producers. But the movie continued cheesy like this afterward. At one point I wondered if it was a spoof of itself. It's like the producers didn't really take this stuff seriously. That's what made it even better.

Watch It: For all the unneed nudity that flashes, walks and jogs across the screen for your benefit.

Skip It: If you're looking for any kind of plot or humor besides gross-out humor. Even James Marsden and Seth Green couldn't save this one (although Green's character is probably my fave).
