Plot 411: A prep school teacher inspires his students to be individuals and fight against conformity.
Review: This is my favorite Robin Williams movie, which may be surprising to some as it is not a comedy. In this dramatic role, Williams plays an all-boys prep school English teacher who uses unorthodox methods to teach his students. Because his ideology and methods do not conform to the school's teachings, he is a rebel among the educators. Through him and his awkward but enlightening lessons, the boys learn to see through the veil of conservative b.s. and form thoughts and ideas for themselves. They learn to question everything in life and determine a moral code for themselves. In this timeless coming-of-age story, the boys learn difficult life lessons, experience hardships due to Puritanical beliefs and are forced to make life-changing decisions. Also starring in this film are Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke.
Watch It: If you're an English major, aspiring educator or anarchist.
Skip It: If you believe in tradition, honor, discipline and excellence at all costs.

you're much more kind, forgiving, and really really willing to suspend disbelief on this one than i am..
This could have been great, but RW falls into some of his regular old modern-day schtick in ways That Guy in That Situation, not only wouldn't, but couldn't.. it's RW stand-up in the middle of a movie part.. net effect is that it's a false note more than once and despite the inherent beauty of the movie and the concept.. like you, didn't let that spoil the enjoyment entirely, because in part i was an unconventional teacher myself who used improv on a daily basis to entertain and inform.. but false notes are false notes.. when he could have really gotten there if only he'd reached beyond himself just a a little further..
it's similar to the moment in Rainman when Raymond says, "course that's Hank Williams, jr.".. just a touch too clever for THAT GUY to come up with..

I can definitely see what you mean about his schtick coming through. Still, I wish there were more teachers like this who are willing to push the boundaries. I suppose this just gets more and more difficult to do with all the regulations these days. It's almost as if the administration wants you to focus on numbers rather than individuals. Don't know how this'll affect the future generations.
Didn't know you were a teacher. You'll get a kick out of these vids that I just posted on my
Paradise Revealed blog. They're really moving and heart warming to the point of tears. Luckily I had some tissue handy.
